On the night of the event, Evan wore a suit.

He didn’t like wearing suits, but Joey had forbidden him to show up wearing cargo pants.

His classic blue weave originated on Savile Row, the single-button jacket sporting a notch lapel. Freddy, William Hunt’s unimprovable tailor, had customized the jetted ticket pocket, the welt pocket on the waistcoat, and the lower inner ticket pocket to accommodate backup cartridges for Evan’s ARES 1911.

Even dressed nicely, he was armored.

He picked up Joey at her apartment, buzzing the call box and waiting on the porch. Through the glass front door he saw her appear at the top of the lobby stairs and felt his breath catch.

She wore a backless cap-sleeve dress cut not too high at the knee to show off the definition of her thighs and calves, and patent-leather Mary Janes from Doc Marten. The diamond pendant he’d gifted her for her birthday glittered at her neck.

He had only a moment to drink in her elegance before she came bounding down the stairs, her shoes clomping audibly.

She shoved the door open, looked him up and down and then up and down once more.

“Gawd, X,” she said. “You look almost … normal.”

His Ford F-150 waited at the curb.

He cleared his throat, shuffled through an internal deck of social responses, found one that, though clichéd, matched the sentiments stirring in his chest.

“You look lovely,” he said.

She blushed.

He offered his arm.

She took it.
